A single door gate is the gate most people actually use every day: the one into the back yard, the one beside the driveway, the one onto the pool deck. It is a single swinging leaf hung on one pair of hinges, and that is exactly why it is the gate most often built badly. A fence panel is held up along its whole length. A gate leaf is held up at two points and asked to swing a few thousand times a year.
We build the leaf as a braced frame in its own right, hang it on hardware sized for its actual weight, and set the hinge post for a swinging load rather than a static one. That is the whole difference between a gate that still closes in five years and one that scrapes the slab by the second summer.
When a Single Door Gate Is the Right Choice
Side-yard and back-yard access
The standard 3–4 ft walk gate between the house and the fence line. Wide enough for a person, a bin or a mower, narrow enough that one leaf stays rigid.
Pool and spa enclosures
A single leaf is easier to make reliably self-closing and self-latching than a pair, which is why most pool-yard openings are built as one gate.
Service and utility access
Meter readers, pest control and lawn crews. A single gate with a keyed or coded latch keeps the opening usable without opening the whole run.
Courtyards and front entries
An ornamental single gate in iron or aluminium sets the entry without the cost or swing space of a pair of leaves.
Single Door Gate vs. Double Door Gate
The decision is mostly about the width of the opening and the space you have to swing into. A single leaf is simpler, cheaper to hang and has half the hardware to maintain — right up until it gets too wide, at which point physics wins.

Single Door Gate Styles We Build

Cedar & Wood Walk Gates
Cedar is the default for a side-yard gate that has to match a wood privacy fence. We build the leaf as its own braced frame rather than cutting a section out of the fence line, because a gate carries its weight on two hinges and a fence does not.
Dog-Ear & Picket Walk Gates
The everyday back-yard gate. A dog-ear picket leaf keeps the same top line as the fence it sits in, and heavy strap hinges spread the load across three or four pickets instead of two.
Horizontal Slat Walk Gates
Horizontal slats read modern and let air through, which matters on a narrow side yard that traps heat. Slat gates need a stiffer frame than they look like they need — the wide face catches wind.
Iron & Steel Walk Gates
We fabricate iron and steel leaves in-house, so a single gate can be built to the opening instead of the opening being framed around a stock panel. Powder coat over properly prepped steel is what keeps it from weeping rust in Gulf Coast humidity.
Chain Link Walk Gates
For yards, kennels and service access. The frame matters more than the mesh: a welded, galvanized frame with rounded corners stays square, where a bolted corner-fitting frame is the part that racks first.
Vinyl & Composite Walk Gates
Vinyl and composite leaves never need painting, but they do need an aluminium or steel insert inside the frame. A hollow vinyl gate with no internal stiffener is the one that sags in its first summer.

Sizing, Posts and Hardware — What Makes a Single Gate Last
- The hinge post does the work. A gate post carries a cantilevered, moving load. We set it deeper and in more concrete than a line post, because in Houston’s expansive clay a post that moves half an inch at grade moves a lot more at the latch.
- The leaf needs a diagonal. A rectangle hinged on one side is a parallelogram waiting to happen. A diagonal brace running from the bottom hinge corner up to the latch corner is what stops the drop.
- Hinges sized to weight, not width. Three hinges instead of two on a heavy leaf, and bolts through the frame rather than screws into a picket.
- Latch height and reach. Where children or pets are involved, latch height and which side it can be reached from are part of the design, not an afterthought.
- Ground clearance. Enough gap to clear seasonal soil movement and turf growth, not so much that a dog can get under it.
- Swing direction. Which way the leaf opens decides where you can stand, whether it clears the slab and, for pool gates, whether it complies at all.
Pool, Side-Yard and Safety Gates
Pool-yard gates are the one case where the hardware is not a preference. A gate into a pool enclosure is normally required to be self-closing and self-latching, to swing away from the water, and to have its latch out of easy reach for a small child. Exact requirements vary between cities, and an HOA can add its own on top, so we confirm what applies at your address before we build rather than after.
The same discipline helps on ordinary side-yard gates with dogs or young children: a self-closing hinge and a positive latch turn “someone left the gate open” into a non-event.

Frequently Asked Questions — Single Door Gates in Houston
How wide should a single door gate be?
Most residential walk gates land between 3 and 4 feet wide. Three feet clears a person and a wheelbarrow; four feet clears a mower or a wheelie bin. Past about 5 feet a single leaf starts to sag under its own weight and a double door gate becomes the better answer.
Can you add a single gate to a fence I already have?
Usually yes. The question is the post, not the fence. A gate post carries a swinging load that a line post was never set for, so we check the existing post depth and condition first and reset or sister a proper gate post where it is needed.
Why does my existing gate drag on the ground?
Almost always one of three things: a gate post that has moved in Houston’s clay, a frame with no diagonal brace, or hinges that were sized for the panel rather than the load. All three are fixable, and all three are worth diagnosing before you replace the leaf.
